Canada Gap Year Travel: Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto

From Tahiti, I took a flight in the middle of the night and arrived in Los Angeles as the next stop on my gap year world travels. Unfortunately the airport experience at Los Angeles left a lot to be desired and I decided to take a flight on the same day to Vancouver in Canada. After a few glorious weeks in the sunshine of tropical islands, Vancouver came as a bit of a shock with its cold weather and gray landscape. I phone a few hostels from the airport & booked a room.

After another night spent in a dormitory with other travellers, it was a relief when morning came and I had the chance to explore Vancouver. Vancouver lies on the Pacific coast of Canada and has one of the largest

parks in North America. Outdoor activities such as boating, skiing and cycling dominate life in the city. Vancouver was a pleasant but cold city to wander around in and after almost six months of travelling, many cities were beginning to appear very similar and the tiredness was growing every day. After a few days in Vancouver, I took a flight to Montreal.

Although Montreal was even colder than Vancouver with snow and ice everywhere, the city was a revelation and seemed much more alive with its' French influences in the cafes and restaurants. The people also appeared to be much friendlier and happier than in Vancouver. I visited various sites in the city but the best part was getting out of the cold and into a French cafe with its high quality French cuisine and wine. Although French is the main language in Montreal, most people understood English and I had no problems in being understood. I will definitely return to Montreal in the future but in the summer time.

My last stop in Canada was in Toronto which is just a short flight away from Montreal. Toronto was a bit of a disappointment after the Gaelic charms of Montreal. Toronto is famous for its' CN Tower and has some of the best art galleries and museums in Canada. Although Toronto has a lively bar scene downtown, I was too tired to appreciate it and decided it was time to return to London and home. Before I could return home, I still had three days to spend in New York which was the next destination on my gap year.
