Gap Year Travel to India: Gandhi Smriti (Birla House) in Delhi

Gandhi Smriti (formerly Birla House) in Delhi where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life. Better known to most people as Mahatma Gandhi (great soul), Gandhi was one of the most important figures of the 20th century as he helped to free India from the British Empire.

Within the walls of Gandhi Smriti lies the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum which was set up in 1995. Walking through the house was an emotional experience as the sense of history and the knowledge that Gandhi had lived here before being assassinated on the 30th January 1948 was truly overwhelming. This visit was definitely one of the major highlights of my gap year to India.
