Gap Year Travel Insurance
Taking out good quality travel insurance is essential before going on a world trip or when travelling to a few countries. Shop around as the cheapest insurance is not necessarily the best option and there are many policies aimed specifically at people taking a gap year or backpackers in general. Some of the more reputable insurance companies include Columbus Direct and Go Travel Insurance.
Ensure that your travel insurance policy covers medical expenses, repatriation, baggage loss, flight cancellations and if required, some policies will also cover extreme activities and dangerous sports at a higher premium. As always read the small print of the insurance policy for conditions, exceptions and limits. |
Check the procedure for making a claim and the information or documentation required for a claim. Keep photocopies of your policy and email a copy to yourself for added security.
Travelling without travel insurance is extremely risky and you, your family or your friends could end up with a bill for thousands of pounds if something does go wrong. Insurance companies may not offer insurance for countries which are deemed to be unsafe by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and therefore travel to certain regions may not be possible.
