The Presidential Palace (Rashtrapati Bhavan) is, as the name suggests, the President of India's official residence based in New Delhi at Raisina Hill. In the days of British rule, the Presidential Palace served as the residence for the Viceroy and Governor-General of India for a few years. The buildings and location are on a grand scale and were designed by the British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens.
One of the best ways to see the Presidential Palace and other historical sites in Delhi is to hire a car (air conditioned if possible) and a driver at the bargain price of around £20 for six hours. It is easy to become exhausted within a few hours from the heat and crowds of Delhi but the car made sightseeing a more pleasurable and relaxed experience. Driver and cars are available for hire all over Delhi and from various hotels and guesthouses. Many drivers will inevitably try and take you to selected shops or restaurants where they will receive a commission. It is best to avoid these places and just pay the driver a large tip at the end of the day. |
