Gap Year Travel to India: Red Fort in Delhi

The Red Fort or Lal Quila was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and was completed in 1648. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Delhi and although it is of great historical value, the Red Fort still plays a part in modern India as it is here that the Prime Minister of India addresses the people of India on 15th August (independence day) each year. In 2007, The Red Fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After its completion in the mid 17th century, the Red Fort served as the residence for the Indian royal family (Imperial Family of India) but over the centuries, the Fort has been used in a variety of ways including as a cantonment by the British. The Red Fort lies in central Delhi and is a must see for anyone travelling to Delhi on a gap year or on holiday in India.
